Anyway, a new shortblock is still a better option. You basically ignored that fact and talked about rebuilds. A new shortblock has 0 miles on it and is definitely worth the extra money over a JDM motor who's mileage you won't know unless you get a front clip. Not to mention, they don't take care of their motors in Japan and that's why there are bad ones out there. If you're only keeping a car for 30K-40K miles, why change the oil? :-) That's the philosophy in Japan where it costs $10K+ per year just to park your car. I don't know about you, but if you trust their motors, more power to you. But for very little more money, you can get a guaranteed brand new shortblock from Nissan with 0 miles on it. This is not a subjective discussion. You sound like a smart guy and that should tell you that this is really the best option if you think about it objectively. Is $700 worth 30-40K miles that might be on your JDM motor where the warranty if flimsy at best? Again, you can have a motor with 0 miles with a nice warranty for $700 more. Your way is just too risky. Even if your motor works out in the long run, it's still not the better option. As far as rebuilds go, Mike Smith is the man. I would let him build a motor for me without the blink of an eye. His attention to detail is amazing from what I hear.
